William Morris Davis ‘Father of American Geography’ called so for his outstanding contributions

•  was instrumental in founding the Association of American Geographers
• his contributions are in the separate but related fields of meteorology, geology, and geography (now better-called geomorphology)
• widen the field of geographical research, enriched the study of geography and research by making them more scientific and logical
• his greatest contribution to physical geography is the ‘Davisian system’ of landscape analysis
• enriched geomorphology, in other words, geography by his theory related to the normal cycle of erosion, it was by far the most influential geographical concept introduced by Davis
• for him the present-day landscape resulted from a long-continued and orderly development
• gave an explanation of the origin of the landscape, and described how is an elevated landform reduced to base level through successive youth, maturity and old stages
• this concept was widely accepted and applied to the study of glaciers, wind erosion, coastal erosion and in every sphere of geomorphology
• he also took interest in doing research on the man and the influence of nature on man
• described nature as control and human activity or behaviour as a response to physical nature, thus, he analysed the relation between man and nature from a deterministic point of view
• Davis advocated for analysis of geographical phenomena in regional unit. Regional geography, (he wrote), seeks to describe the geographical elements of given area in totality as they exist together in their natural combinations and correlations
• This idea on regions were widely accepted in Europe especially in Germany and France
